Performance update from the Cornguy
This has been one of the most unusual years that I've ever witnessed. The most important factors I've observed in the perfromance of corn this year were 1. Hybrid selection 2. Rain, too much in places all at once, and in other places not enough. 3. Planting dates were as always huge and in most cases the earlier planted, the better. 4. Hot dry intense heat post pollination was a critical factor in grain fill and a huge component in the variabilty that we've seen in the crops.
Not all hybrids performed the same way everywhere, but here's a capsule look at the performance of our leading selling varieties.
• 110-E9VT3 has had exceptional performance for the past 3 years and this year it stood out even more. 110-E9 excelled in all
traits - RR, VT3, VT3PRO, and SmartStax.
• 112-H9VT3 performed well in most cases, however, when too much water or saturated fields played into the equation
standability and disease were a problem.
• 103-R3VT3 was clearly the variety to beat in the 103-day maturity.
• 113-AP3000GT was arguably one of our best performing varieties.
• 110-AP3000GT was also very good but not as consistent.
• 105-AP3000GT was outstanding in yields and dry down.
• 104-APGT was an outstanding dual purpose corn.
SmartStax, we offered two SmartStax varieties this year, 109-STR and 110-STC. The 110-STC had very good performance, consistent witht he 110-E9VT3. The 109-STR was inconsistent; when nitrogen leaching was a factor the performance was poor. I firmly believe that the performance of SmartStax were a varietal issue not trait related. The variability in the performance of the 109-STR is a likely result of a genetic by environment interaction.
The Silver Series, in early testing, has risen to the top in comparison to the performance of elite genetics in the industry. The 113-D1VT3PRO and the 110-H3VT3PRO are extremely versatile with top yield potential and excel across variable soil types.
The importance of a hybrid portfolio on your farm cannot be overstated. I honestly consider 110-E9-VT3 to be the leading genetic combination in the industry. However, no hybrid is perfect and sooner or later something will affect the most advanced variety. At Frontiersmen we have an elite performance package and we all need to have a combination of varieties for high level consistent performance.
